TCC Video: Why Catholics Should Stand With Standing Rock

Standing Rock Protestor

Catholics need to stand with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota non-violently resisting the construction of an oil pipeline on their land for four major reasons. 1) This is a religious liberty issue. The Sioux do not want their sacred burials lands desacralized by construction. 2) This is a social justice issue. The pipeline would go under the reservation’s only source of drinking water for 10,000 people. According to the industry, there have been 3,300 leaks and ruptures of similar pipelines since 2010. Because of the risk, the pipeline was rerouted around Bismark, a larger city. 3) The Holy Father has called for respect of indigenous people and their way of life. 4) The Church’s position on climate change is clear. Caring for Creation is a work of mercy. Polluting the environment is a sin. The Vatican was the world’s first carbon neutral state. Pope Francis laid out why Christians and all people of goodwill are called to care for Creation, in part, by switching to renewable energy, in his encyclical Laudato Si. Watch the video:
