This is what a Roman Catholic theologian looks like. My dear friend, Jenny Martin, professor of theology at Notre Dame, and mother of three, has a new book out: Hans Urs Von Balthasar and the Critical Appropriation of Russian Religious Thought. Hans Urs Von Balthasar, the famous Swiss, 20th century theologian, explores not only classical themes (such as the nature of truth, goodness, and beauty), but also engages the ways in which the Church must encounter the contemporary world. Balthasar’s thought is indispensable for any comprehensive theological understanding of the Church today. Professor Martin’s book not only engages von Balthasar’s work in its own right but examines it in its relationship to three, often neglected, important Russian Orthodox thinkers.
