President-John-F-Kennedy

Today is the 52nd anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy the first and only culturally Catholic President of the United States. A Catholic in the White House was made possible, at least in part, by the theology of the Jesuit priest John Courtney Murray. Murray, who appeared on the cover of Time Magazine during Kennedy’s presidency, argued that the American project was compatible with Roman Catholicism. Although many scholars argue about the relative value of many of Murray’s positions, his theology continues to have a long and lasting legacy.
