Brother Sun Sister Moon

There are many books for children about the life of St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast is today. We recommend Brother Sun, Sister Moon by Katherine Paterson, which re-imagines the hymn of praise proclaimed by Saint Francis in 1224. What makes this book stand-out are the beautiful illustrations of paper artist Pamela Dalton. It is a tribute to the wonders of creation and the saint who loved them. We also recommend  Francis: The Poor Man of Assisi and The Song of Francis both by Tomie dePaola. DePaola has written and illustrated over a 100 books for children, many of them based on saint stories and folk tales. As a young man dePaola tried to become a Benedictine monk, and his Catholicism informs his art. Though he has sold more than 6 million books, dePaola has never crossed over to television and has continued to make his living with quiet art-filled storybooks, which take children’s imaginations seriously.  Read these with your children or give them as a gift today.
