Dorothy Love Coates

Dorothy Love Coates began playing piano in the Baptist church at the age of ten. She would sing with such verve that she would have to be walked off the stage, a device also used by James Brown. Coates was active in the Civil Rights movement saying, “The Lord has blessed our going out and our coming in. He’s blessed our sitting in too.” We recommend the track “Strange Man,” which tells the story of the woman at the well (John 4), and on the last verse brings it into the present moment.
