The Young Victoria

Looking for a movie that tells the story of a great marriage of equals? Perhaps something to watch on Valentine’s Day? Look no further than The Young Victoria, released in 2009. Starring Emily Blunt (as Queen Victoria) and Rupert Friend (as Prince Albert), the film tells the true story of their friendship, courtship, and eventual marriage. Victoria ruled England with Albert as her closest advisor for 21 years. At first, the young Queen resisted Albert’s advances, fearing he would seek to usurp her power, as she was constantly being manipulated by everyone else in her life. Eventually she came to trust him. At one point, Albert even risks his life to save her own. Victoria and Albert had dreams of reforming education, helping laborers and the poor, and supporting the arts and sciences. They went on to have nine children. After Albert’s death at the age of 42, from typhoid, Victoria had his clothes laid out, in memory of him, every morning until her death at the age of 81. This film is rated PG and is suitable for the whole family.
