Swing Kids is based on the true story of teenage jazz and swing lovers in pre-World War II Germany who met in dance clubs to listen to music banned by the Third Reich. The film stars Christian Bale, and Robert Sean Leonard as high school students who attempt to be swing kids by night and Hitler Youth by day, a decision that forces them to finally decide which side they are on. The film received mixed reviews, mostly for being somewhat cheesy, but it tells an important story of young people resisting evil via music, community and nonviolence. Of all the movies I watched as a kid, Swing Kids was at the top of the list with Dances With Wolves for greatest moral impact. Watch it with your older kids.
