In 1944 Going My Way was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won 7, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor. It’s a musical, a comedy, and a drama directed and written by Leo McCarey and starring Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald. The film tells the story of a young priest named Fr. Chuck O’Malley (played by Crosby) who takes over a failing parish. Crosby sings five songs in the film. Fr. O’Malley is a Pope Francis-like young priest, whose unconventional style, informal attitude, and good heart, eventually win over even his greatest detractors. This is a great film to watch with young children. Even if they can’t follow all of the plot they will certainly enjoy the music. After World War II, Crosby and McCarey presented a copy of the film to Pope Pius XII at the Vatican. The film ends at Christmas and is an inspiring movie to watch this time of year.
