BRAZIL-POPE-WYD-APARECIDA Yesterday Pope Francis prayed at the shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, the patroness of Brazil, as part of the ongoing celebration of World Youth Day. Pilgrims light candles at the shrine above. Misc: Humble Pope Asks Permission to Enter Brazil

The 76-year old Pope Francis carried his own bag as he boarded the plane for World Youth Day in Brazil yesterday. Apparently, the Pope travels light. John Allen writes for The National Catholic Reporter that when he touched down in Rio, Francis said to the gathered pilgrims, “I have neither silver nor gold, but I bring with me the most precious thing given to me: Jesus Christ!”  He said he wanted young people to, “create a world of brothers and sisters.” Read the whole article here: Humble Pope Asks Permission to Enter Brazil

Rio is an expensive city and many Brazilians are opening their homes to Catholic youth from around the world. During World Youth Day, Pope Francis will also be visiting hospitals, and poor favelas.
