TCC Playlist: Up Above My Head by Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Sister Rosetta Tharpe started playing guitar and singing in church at the age of four. By six she was part of a traveling gospel group. We love how Tharpe wrote and performed gospel heavily influenced by early rock and roll, including the electric guitar. Her music makes you want to dance.  Tharpe was the first big gospel success in the 30s and 40s, but she never crossed over to popular music. We recommend the rockabilly call and response track “Up Above My Head.”  Hear it after the jump:

Something beautiful and unexpected happened in the middle of the Broadway revival of Horton Foote’s, The Trip to Bountiful. When Cicely Tyson, who plays Mrs. Carrie Watts (center) begins singing the classic Protestant hymn “Blessed Assurance” the audience sings along.
