Today is the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, a holy day of obligation. The earliest known prayer to the Theotokos (Greek, for “Bearer of God”) was found on a fragment of papyrus dating back to approximately 250 AD. The Via Matris or Way of the Mother is a set of seven stations each marking the seven sorrows of the Virgin Mary. At each station, silently reflect on Mary’s sorrow.
