Maya Angelou, the memoirist, poet and essayist, whose 1969 book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” described in unsparing prose her childhood in the Jim Crow South, died today in her home. She was 86 years old. (She is seen above with her mother Vivian Baxter and dancing with Amiri Baraka after the jump.) Ms. Angelou’s faith in God played a crucial role in her difficult life.
