Madonna and Child by Matisse For the memorial of St. Cyril of Alexandria we recommend this sketch of the Madonna and Child by Matisse. Saint Cyril of Alexandria deserves to be remembered for this gift to us, if for nothing else. It is the name he gave to the Blessed Virgin Mary: “Theotokos,” which is Greek for “the bearer of God.” More from Melissa Musick after the jump:

TCC Films: A Model for Matisse

A Model for Matisse A Model for Matisse is a short filmdirected by Barbara Freedwhich tells the story of the friendship between Sister Jacques-Marie, and the celebrated artist Henri Matisse. Their relationship began before she was a nun, when she started working for him as a personal nurse.  Soon after she began posing for drawings and helping him with his work. Eventually she joined a convent and played a central role in helping Matisse design the Chapelle du Rosaire, right before his death.  He considered the chapel to be his masterpiece. Matisse believed in God but didn’t consider himself a Catholic, and yet his friendship and love for Sister Jacques Marie inspired something in him.  The chapel is hyper modern, some of the art in the chapel is described by Sister Jacques as “scribbles” so this is an interesting film both about a beautiful friendship between an artist and his muse, and about modern art more generally.  See more photos and a link to the trailer after the jump:
