Hobby Lobby

Ross Douthat writes in The New York Times about the value of religious pluralism, and faith-based organizations (which serve the common good), and the argument the political left is currently making, that religious business and charitable organizations should change their beliefs or be shut down. He writes, “The political left is expending a remarkable amount of energy trying to fine, vilify and bring to heel organizations — charities, hospitals, schools and mission-infused businesses — whose commitments they might under other circumstances extol.” Read the entire essay here: A Company Liberals Could Love

birth control

President Obama’s Affordable Care Act required employers to pay for their employees birth control and morning after pills like Plan B and Ella.  Today the Supreme Court declared that companies like Conestoga Wood and Hobby Lobby, with religious objections to paying for the destruction of fertilized human embryos, would not be required to violate their religious beliefs, so long as their employees could easily obtain the products elsewhere. Emma Green has the story in The Atlantic here: Supreme Court: Companies Can’t Be Required to Pay for Birth Control

Misc: Family Owned Mennonite Company Forced to Comply With HHS Mandate

remodeling

Mennonites, like many other Christians, including Catholics, believe that they have a moral duty to respect the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death. Mennonites are pacifist and do not believe in killing of any kind, since Jesus taught his followers to love their enemies. Likewise, they believe that it would be immoral for them to intentionally participate in, pay for, or facilitate, the destruction of a fertilized human zygote or embryo. As a result, a small family-owned Mennonite wood manufacturing business, Conestoga Wood Specialities, sued the Obama administration over the HHS mandate  which requires employers to pay for their employees morning after pills, such as Plan B and Ella.  The family argued that being forced to do so would violate their religious freedom. They have lost their case.  Read the story from Catholic News Service here: Mennonite owned wood manufacturer sues over contraception mandate  And here: Court Forces Mennonite Company to Comply with HHS Mandate
