Pope Francis Joy

Pope Francis has released his first Apostolic Exhortation, “Evangelii Gaudium” or “The Joy of the Gospel”. It is an incredible, challenging, and wide-ranging document. In it he writes, “How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points?  . . . Can we continue to stand by when food is thrown away while people are starving? This is the case of inequality. Today everything comes under the laws of competition and the survival of the fittest, where the powerful feed upon the powerless.” He continues, “I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security.”  Read the entire thing at the Vatican’s website here: Evangelii Gaudium. Pope-Francis-

Pope Francis has given an interview to a prominent Italian atheist, Eugenio Scalfari, in which he says, “Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense. We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us. Sometimes after a meeting I want to arrange another one because new ideas are born and I discover new needs. This is important: to get to know people, listen, expand the circle of ideas. The world is crisscrossed by roads that come closer together and move apart, but the important thing is that they lead towards the Good.” Read the entire thing in La Repubblica here:  The Pope: how the Church will change
