We bought a beehive last fall and we are awaiting the spring delivery of the Italian bees we ordered a couple of weeks ago. Imagine my delight when I received a copy of the Rural Life Prayerbook, which was published by The National Catholic Rural Life Conference in 1956 and has been re-issued this year. Bees pollinate a third of our food supply, but colonies have been disappearing at alarming rates in many parts of the world due to the accumulated effects of parasitic mites, viral and bacterial diseases, and exposure to pesticides and herbicides. Dr. Marla Spivak, University of Minnesota professor of entomology and 2010 MacArthur Fellow, encourages people to plant flowering plants (without herbicides or pesticides) in order to help save bees. Planting flowering plants also seems like a great way to honor St. Francis, whose feast day is October 4th. Watch Professor Spivak’s Ted Talk after the jump:
