Many of us have resolved to make space in our lives for silence in the New Year. Readings on quiet here:

Then the Lord said, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood in the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, “Elijah, why are you here?”

– 1 Kings 19:11-13

“We have within in us a center of stillness surrounded by silence.”

– Fr. John Dunne CSC

Be still and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted upon the earth.

Psalm 46:10-11

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.

-Blessed Mother Teresa

Only in God is my soul at rest;
From him comes my salvation,
my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all.
Only in God be at rest, my soul,
Far from him comes my hope.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed.
With God is my safety and my glory,
he is the rock of my strength; my refuge is in God.
Trust in him at all times, O my people!
Pour your hearts out before him;
God is my refuge!

Psalm 62:2-3,6-9

The heart has reasons which reason does not know.

-Blaise Pascal

It is best to learn to silence the faculties and to cause them to be still, so that God may speak.
-St John of the Cross

A judicious silence is always better than truth spoken without charity.
-St. Francis De Sales

But the Lord is in his holy temple;
let all the earth keep silence before him

-Habakkuk 2:20

The heart speaks. There are signs. Things are meant. There is a way.
