Naomi Klein writes of Pope Francis’ encyclical on the environment in The New Yorker. She misunderstands a lot about the Catholic worldview. For example, “hating the things of earth and loving the things of heaven” is a statement about the values of people, vis a vis, the values of God. It’s not about hating Creation. After all, St. Francis is one of the most beloved Catholic saints. But Klein grasps the reason for Pope Francis’ optimism.
