Procession at Lourdes

Today is the memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes. It marks the day when, first on February 11, in 1858, and 17 times thereafter, Mary appeared to 14-year old Bernadette Soubirous. It marks the appearances, as well as the place where Mary told the young girl dig for water with her hands. Today, the town of Lourdes, where Bernadette first saw the Virgin, and where the spring waters still flow, is known all over the world as a place of prayer, praise and healing.

We remember the sick and suffering who have come to these waters for healing. We remember all the sick and suffering. If you are well, go to a hospital or nursing home today and visit a sick relative, friend or neighbor. Pray for the sick today.

Here are some prayers for the sick:

A Prayer for a Sick Adult
Lord and Father, almighty and eternal God,
by your blessing you give us strength and support in our frailty:
turn with kindness toward this your servant N.
Free him/her from all illness and restore him/her to health,
so that in the sure knowledge of your goodness
he/she will gratefully bless your holy name.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

A Prayer for a Sick Child
God of love, ever caring, ever strong,
stand by us in our time of need.
Watch over N., who is sick;
look after him/her in every danger,
and grant him/her your healing and peace.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

A Prayer for the Elderly  (John Henry Newman)
May God support us all the day long till the shades lengthen and the evening come and the busy world is hushed and the fever of life is over and our work is done. Then in mercy may God give us a safe lodging and a holy rest and peace at the last. Amen.

A Prayer for Those in Nursing Homes
Lord Jesus Christ, hope of the frail and infirm,
remember Simeon and Anna,
the aged prophets who longed to see your face
and who held you as an infant,
brought to the Temple in your mother’s arms.
Come today to comfort and redeem the ailing in nursing homes, especially ______,
together with all those who devote nights and days
to serve them in their needs.
Give us all the grace to see your face in one another.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

A Prayer for Parents after a Miscarriage
Father and Creator, in whom all life and death find meaning,
we bless you at all times,
especially when we have need of your consolation.
N. and N. entrust to your care a life conceived in love.
May your blessing come upon them now.
Remove all anxiety from their minds
and strengthen this love
so that they may have peace in their hearts and home.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
