The Swan Silvertones

The Swan Silvertones were a popular American gospel group in the 1940s and 50s. We love their rendition of “Oh Mary Don’t You Weep” an African American spiritual that pre-dates the Civil War. The story of Moses delivering the slaves out of Egypt inspired American slaves and “Mary Don’t You Weep” played an important role in the American Civil Rights Movement. An agnostic friend once said, “When I listen to the Swan Silvertones I feel like I believe.” Listen after the jump:

Anton Armstrong The St. Olaf choir is one of the premier a capella college choirs in the United States. In this track,  directed by Anton Armstrong, they perform one of the spritituals of William L. Dawson, “Ain a That Good News.”  The choir sings, “I heard about Him one day /He washed my sins away /Ain’t you heard about Him? / The cross is good news.” Listen to it after the jump:
