All Christians invited to celebrate the first synod of Nicea in 2025

pope-francis-patriarch-bartholomew On his return from Jerusalem, where he met with Pope Francis at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, revealed an appointment for unity between Catholics and Orthodox: a gathering at Nicaea in 2025, where the first ecumenical council of the undivided Church was celebrated. Bartholomew said, “We agreed to leave as a legacy to ourselves and our successors a gathering in Nicaea in 2025, to celebrate together, after 17 centuries, the first truly ecumenical synod, where the Creed was first promulgated.” Catholics and Orthodox are getting the band back together. Maya Angelou, the memoirist, poet and essayist, whose 1969 book, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” described in unsparing prose her childhood in the Jim Crow South, died today in her home. She was 86 years old. (She is seen above with her mother Vivian Baxter and dancing with Amiri Baraka after the jump.) Ms. Angelou’s faith in God played a crucial role in her difficult life. “In the birthplace of the Prince of Peace . . . I offer my home in the Vatican as a place for this encounter of prayer.”

In the wake of stalled negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians, Pope Francis announced a peace initiative Sunday, asking the presidents of the two governments to come to Rome to speak together and pray with him.
