TCC Playlist: No Depression by Uncle Tupelo

Posted in TCC Playlist | Under , , , , |

tumblr_mmhtjnkbvO1qll1ero1_500 We recommend the Carter Family Depression-era spiritual “No Depression,” recorded by the 90s alt-country band Uncle Tupelo. Uncle Tupelo was made up of Jay Farrar, Jeff Tweedy and Mike Heidorn. Together they created a sound that was a mixture of punk, old timey Appalachian, Nashville country, and outlaw country. We love how Farrar’s voice makes this old song new, “I’m going where there’s no depression, to a better land that’s free from care, I’ll leave this world of toil and trouble, my home’s in heaven, I’m going there.” Listen after the jump:

My-Big-Fat-Greek Wedding My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a light romantic comedy about a woman in her thirties (Nia Vardalos) whose Greek Orthodox parents (Michael Constantine and Laine Kazan) flip out, first, because she’s not yet married, and second, because she’s fallen in love with a a non-Greek man (John Corbett). The movie, based on Vardalos’ one-woman show, pokes fun at the crazy things our families put us through, and yet points out how it can be possible to be your own person while maintaing a relationship with one’s family. Anyone who grew up in a big Catholic family will find something to relate to in this sweet film. (Best for adults and teens.) Watch the trailer after the jump:

Black Forest Fire

Pope Benedict XVI made the Vatican the world’s only carbon-neutral state, criticized the world’s leaders for not doing enough to halt climate change, and named “polluting the environment” a sin that required repentance. Christians are called to be good stewards of creation. In this essay in Mother Jones, James West explains how climate change could be making wildfires in Colorado and across the American West worse. Read it here: Colorado is Burning Even Worse Than Last Year.

Emissions

Pope Francis has said, “Let us be protectors of creation, protectors of God’s plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment. Let us not allow omens of destruction and death to accompany the advance of this world!”  He has also said that when mankind loses respect for nature,  “ecological problems arise, like global warming.” President Obama is trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the US by 17% in 2020. Read about his plan in The New York Times here: Obama puts legacy at Stake With Clean Air Act.
